In short

  • Cartagena is warm all year — around 27–28°C (81–82°F) on average, with daytime highs near 31–32°C (88–90°F).
  • The dry season runs from December to April; it is the sunniest period but also the windiest, with choppier seas for island trips.
  • The wettest months are September to November, with October usually the rainiest; showers tend to be short and intense rather than all-day.
  • Peak demand falls in mid-December to mid-January, Easter week and June–July — book villas and boats months ahead for these dates.
  • For a balance of great weather and fewer crowds, consider late January to March, or May and early June.

There is no bad time to visit Cartagena — only different versions of it. The city sits just ten degrees north of the equator, so the temperature barely changes through the year. What does change is the rain, the wind, the sea and the crowds. Knowing how those shift month to month is the key to choosing the right dates for your trip.

Cartagena's climate at a glance

Cartagena has a tropical climate with an average temperature of around 27–28°C (81–82°F) and high humidity. Days typically peak at 31–32°C, and nights rarely drop below 24°C. Rather than four seasons, locals talk about two: the dry season (verano) and the rainy season (invierno).

  • Dry season — December to April: sunny skies, very little rain and steady trade winds that make the heat more comfortable in the city.
  • Transition — May to August: more humidity and some showers, with a drier spell around late June and July often called the veranillo de San Juan.
  • Rainy season — September to November: the wettest months, with heavy but usually short afternoon or evening downpours. October tends to be the rainiest.

Sea conditions: what it means for island and boat days

If your trip includes the Rosario Islands or a day on a yacht, the wind matters as much as the rain. From December to April the trade winds are strongest, and crossings to the islands can be choppy, especially after midday. From May to November the sea is usually calmer and clearer — ideal for snorkelling and long days on the water, provided you plan around the occasional afternoon storm.

Cartagena month by month

  • January: dry, sunny and breezy. The first half is peak holiday season; later in the month the city hosts major cultural events such as its classical music festival and the Hay Festival of literature.
  • February: one of the best months overall — dry weather, lively cultural calendar and fewer crowds than the holidays. Windy at sea.
  • March: still dry and sunny. Easter week (Semana Santa) can fall in March or April and brings high domestic demand.
  • April: the tail end of the dry season; rain begins to appear late in the month.
  • May: warmer and more humid with some showers, but quieter streets and good availability — a smart shoulder month.
  • June: calmer seas and the start of mid-year holidays; demand rises from the second half of the month.
  • July: a relatively dry spell with good sea conditions and high season for families from Colombia, the US and Europe.
  • August: warm and humid with occasional storms; good value after the July rush.
  • September: rain increases; lower prices and an unhurried city.
  • October: usually the rainiest month. Expect short, intense downpours — the best time for travellers who want value and calm.
  • November: rain eases toward the end of the month. Cartagena celebrates its independence with festivities around November 11.
  • December: the dry season returns. The second half of the month through New Year's is the most in-demand period of the year.

High season and when to book

Cartagena's busiest periods are mid-December to mid-January, Easter week and June–July, along with Colombian long weekends (puentes festivos). During these dates the best private villas, yachts and island properties are often booked months in advance, and minimum-night stays are common. If you are planning a wedding, a large group or a milestone celebration in these windows, start planning six to twelve months ahead.

Our favourite times to visit

  • Late January to March — dry weather, cultural events and a lively city without the holiday rush.
  • May and early June — quieter streets, calmer seas and excellent availability.
  • Late November and early December — the rains fade, the city prepares for the holidays and prices haven't peaked yet.
